Immune System – what does it do?

The overall function of the immune system is to prevent or limit infection. Our immune system plays an important role in defending our bodies from aggressive germs and other harmful substances that can make us susceptible to the common colds, the flu, and other serious illnesses.

Dietary and lifestyle habit changes can make all the difference in the world. Foods enriched with vitamins is a big plus. This article addresses what you can do to stay healthy.

A Healthy and Balanced Diet

A well-balanced and nutrient-rich diet is important as it can stave off pathogens. A diet that includes whole grains and legumes, plus a diet enriched with plant-based foods, (fruits and vegetables) can help keep your immune system functioning optimally. Foods that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, PLUS fiber, can help decrease your susceptibility to illness.

Lean proteins found in fish like salmon as well as virgin olive oil, can help reduce inflammation in the body and can equally help boost your immune system.

IV Therapy

Did you know that IV treatment is a fast and simple way to boost your immune system? This type of treatment is becoming more popular, especially after the Covid virus hit. If you are recovering from Covid, you may still feel tired. Why not look into receiving an IV therapy treatment that provides the necessary nutrients to pull you up.

IV treatment therapy is also ideal for those who experience dehydration, jet lag, or hangovers.

If you are a workaholic, experiencing financial problems, or dealing with a difficult relationship,  most likely you are under a great deal of stress. And for people who are suffering from an underlying mental condition, it is important to learn how to manage your stress. Stress can wreak havoc on your immune system by producing high cortisol levels that can impact your body’s anti-inflammatory response.

It is important for you to identify your sources of stress and fight them with some effective stress reduction strategies like exercise, deep breathing, mediation, etc.

Sleep and a Period of Rest

Getting a good night’s sleep is important.  There is a strong correlation between getting a good night’s sleep and strong immunity. While you are sleeping, your body produces the all-important infection-fighting molecules like cytokines, and T cells, which are a type of white blood cell that regulate immune response and target viruses.

Try to get a good night’s sleep at least 7-9 hours every night to provide your immune system the best chance to prevent and combat infections and illnesses.

Closing your eyes for 15 minutes every day can help too.

Exercise – Build Strength

Regular exercise can help keep you healthy. In fact, regular exercise will not only improve your physique but enhance your immune system, reduce inflammation and improve circulation. Experts advise exercising about 150 minutes every week is ideal.

Hydration – Good for the Body and Your Skin

Water flushes out all the harmful toxins that build up in our systems. Those toxins can weaken the immune system. Water helps improve the flow of lymph (the fluid that carries key immune cells throughout the body).

In addition, water can keep your skin looking healthy. If your fingertips are wrinkled, it is a sign that you are in need of water. Don’t ignore it.

Practicing these lifestyle changes will ensure your immune system stays healthy.
